Parrish Healthcare to Participate in National Lung Cancer Screening Day, Sat., Nov. 9

TITUSVILLE, FLA. (October 30, 2024)—Parrish Healthcare Oncology and Parrish Medical Group Diagnostics in Titusville join the American Cancer Society National Lung Cancer Roundtable (ACS NLCRT), American College of Radiology (ACR), Radiology Health Equity Coalition (RHEC) and GO2 for Lung Cancer (GO2) for the second annual National Lung Cancer Screening Day on Saturday, November 9, 2024.

Screenings will be provided by Parrish Medical Group Diagnostics, an American College of Radiology Designated Lung Cancer Screening Center, located inside the Parrish Healthcare Center at 250 Harrison St., Titusville, FL, 32780 (Titus Landing), on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to noon. To schedule a screening, call 321-268-6150.

The National Lung Cancer Screening Day campaign has two main goals. The first goal is to help raise awareness of early cancer detection through regular lung cancer screening. And the second goal is to reduce access disparities by encouraging screening providers to open their clinics on Saturdays for patients who cannot leave work during weekdays.

“Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, with an estimated 125,000+ deaths this year. But fewer than 1 in 10 eligible individuals get screened for lung cancer. That’s why we are proud to participate in this important initiative to do our part to help reduce disparities and increase screening rates in our community,” said Marinely Cruz-Amy, MD, Parrish Healthcare oncology program medical director.

The screening involves a low dose CT scan, which is a special kind of x-ray that provides a detailed picture of the lungs able to detect the earliest signs of cancer. Lung cancer screenings with low-dose computed tomography scans, and appropriate follow-up care, significantly reduces lung cancer deaths.

“Lung cancer takes the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined,” added Cruz-Amy.

Screening is recommended for adults ages 55-80 who have a history of smoking 30 cigarettes a day for a year, who currently smoke or who have quit within the past 15 years. Screenings are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare. For more information, please visit parrishhealthcare.com/oncology.
