Staying active is the main factor in being healthy. Being involved in activities that keep you from being stationary not only improves heart health, but can reduce your risk of cancer as well. You’ll also gain strength in your in muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints, making you less prone to injuries.
So, we challenge you to forgo the boring stationary bike and treadmill for a while, and take it outside! These outdoor sports are certainly cool, but they’ll put fire to some calories and make you look and feel awesome!
1. Swimming
If you want to participate in a good, low-impact sport, take it to the pool. While swimming may not feel like a workout, you’ll still get the benefits of a full-body train! If you are looking for a way to stay active with arthritis, an aquatic workout can help alleviate pain caused by inflammation.
2. Paddleboarding
Over the past few years, paddleboarding has become a watersport favorite and probably one of the best water-based activities for strengthening your core. Bonus: It can also reduce your risk of injury as well as reducing back pain and better posture to boot!
3. Kayaking
If you want to add a little bit of “zen” to your sport, then try kayaking. As a great workout for your shoulders, arms, back, and core, we encourage you to paddle the day away — just be sure to paddle from your core!
4. Beach Volleyball
If you’ve got a bit of a competitive edge to you, then beach volleyball could be your sport! Running on sand will add a little extra burn to your game. Work your legs, butt, shoulders and core as you jump and run to spike the ball over the net. Plus, it’s a great way to socially get in a workout too!
5. Surfing
“Hang ten” with a total body workout and surf some waves. A great cardio workout, surfing helps strengthen your core, back, and shoulders, while building endurance. Not to mention, with all that balancing on top of the board, your legs will get a good drill, too!
While outdoor sports provide excellent benefits to staying fit and heart-healthy, remember that you’ll be in the sun. So, protect yourself against damaging UV rays and apply waterproof sunscreen.
